Freshers 2014/15

Freshers fair 2013

WELCOME

A word from the President…

Welcome to the Mohawks! We are the Ultimate Frisbee team at the University of Sussex. If you’ve ever wondered about Ultimate and what it’s about, or fancy trying a new sport (or of course if you are already a pro player), we are here for you! We have a large club full of great people who love the sport and love everything that comes with it. Whether you are super competitive and fancy getting onto the GB team in a year, or whether you just fancy a run around once a week with some fun people, come along and give it a try. I started Ultimate at Sussex three years ago and haven’t looked back.

We are very proud of our website. Join the forum to find out all information you may want to know about us – socials, trainings, tournaments, and more! Introduce yourself there and get involved in some discussions. We have a facebook page and twitter too but the forum is where you will find everything you need to know.

We hope to see you this year – whether you are a fresher or a Sussex returnee.  If you’re not sure, come along and give it a shot – you won’t regret it!

Adam

President 2014-2015

MOHAWKS TRAINING

We train at least twice a week as a club but there are a lot more informal meet ups too – buy a disc and you can chuck around with anyone, anytime.

Our main training sessions are:

  1. WEDNESDAY - Stanmer Park (outdoors)
    • 1-3pm Beginners
    • 3-5pm Experienced
  2. FRIDAY - Here we run two sessions that overlap
    • 2-5pm Stanmer Park (outdoors)
    • 2-5pm Sussex Sports Centre Hall 1 (indoors)

    - Division of trainings are yet to be decided. It’s safe to say everyone will get some of both indoors and outdoors on friday.

You’ll want to bring a light and a dark shirt, and then; indoors, a pair of clean, non-marking trainers; and outdoors, a pair of football boots if you have them.

Here is the University of Sussex Campus Map. Stanmer park is at the bottom left of the map, left of the Attenborough Centre. Accessed from opposite the Sports Centre.

Sicko 2013BEGINNERS TOURNAMENTS

We’ve got 3 ‘beginner tournaments’ lined up this year. So-called because they have dedicated beginner divisions, where the freshers of unis from all over the south-east get to play each other. Play some frisbee, meet some people, and party!

SUSSEX UNION MEMBERSHIP

To play on any sports team at the University of Sussex you are required to be a fully paid member of the universities union. The membership covers training (coaching and facility hire) and insurance (injuries and when going away with the club).

UK ULTIMATE

In order to play for the local club team (such as Brighton Ultimate), or at regionals for the Mohawks you must be a basic member of UK Ultimate. In order to play Nationals with the Mohawks , or Tour with Brighton Ultimate, you must be a full ,or Under 18/Student, member. You can read more about UK Ultimate and sign up via this and navigating your way through by the index on the left hand side. If you are confused please just ask one of us, we were all there once!

  1. A note on Friday practice. Annoyingly the university likes to put lectures and seminars on! I KNOW!

So that session is always a bit ad-hoc. There will though always be experienced people there to organise everything. It's a great chance to play more games and practice the throws, catches or match play you want to work on. The experience people can help you.

Also look on the Mohawk Facebook page, twitter and/or the forum to see any information on the Friday session week on week. That said, the Facebook page is a great place to find people also on campus, between lectures, looking for a 45 minutes chuck around. Just outside the Library is a popular place.
