Brixton Indoor Regional Qualifiers February 2002
Yo.

This report is bound to sound weird, because I'm also sending it in to the
student newspaper, thus have to make it comprehendible for those unwise in
the ways of the disc. Also, I copied and pasted it from Word.

At 9:00am last Saturday morning, the Mohawks' captain found himself in a
sports centre in Brixton wondering where the hell the rest of his team were,
as he and two others faced five Ultimate Frisbee players from Cambridge.

Through a combined team effort, half of the eleven attending Mohawks had
managed to leave Brighton almost an hour late on Saturday morning, and many
others were struggling to find their way around central London in their
early morning dazed states.

Three of our team, however, had stayed in London the night before, and
thus had made it to the sports centre in time to find both our entered teams
(Mohawks A and B) had their first games at 9 o'clock.

So, with just three players present, Mohawks A started playing Cambridge's
second team, Strange Blue 2. Even with this huge disadvantage, the three
Mohawks stormed to a 7-4 victory, only to be told that the tournament rules
state the game is declared void if five players aren't on the pitch, so we
were given a 15-0 loss instead. Although the rule seemed nonsensical, we
suppressed our disappointment for lack of any good reason as to why we were
late in the first place.

All eleven players managed to turn up before the next game, so we chose how
to divide ourselves into an A and a B team, and then the show really started
to roll.

Eager to make up for an already poor group position, we (Mohawks A) played
hard against the next team in our group, Surrey Slingers 2, beating them
comfortably 13-1.

Next up were Hammerage, who we knew to be probably the best team in our
group and turned out to be one of the top four teams in the tournament.
They played well, and although we put up a good fight, they had more
experience and stronger players, so beat us convincingly 9-1.

Under Cover Lovers (UCL - University College, London) were next, and when we
got 7-4 ahead with a few minutes remaining, they stepped up a gear and
scored a couple of points in quick succession, bring it to a
too-close-for-comfort 7-6. The Mohawks managed to keep their cool and didn'
t drop any discs, holding the score long enough to secure the victory.
Satisfied we'd beaten probably the second best team in our group, not
counting ourselves, we waited to hear the final word on what the rankings
for our group would be, and, as we had feared, it was a three way tie (out
of five teams) so went to points difference, which meant the 15-0 default
loss was costly and placed us forth, thus meaning we missed out on a
position in the top eight.

Britain winning the gold medal in the Olympic Curling inspired our call
(what the teams do together to wind down after each game), which involved
sliding discs across the floor toward a makeshift target, yelling avidly at
sweepers running alongside with a couple of mops. The final effect was
sheer quality.

In the second stage of the actual tournament - of which it was possible
to lose sight when wrapped up in a close Ultimate Curling match - the
Mohawks played solidly to beat Bad Habits (from Clapham) 6-2, Strange Blue 2
(properly, this time) 11-2, and Worst Habits 13-1. This concluded Saturday'
s games, so we relaxed by going to a few pubs around London that night
before collapsing exhausted at the flat of my brother, who, having played
three years for Warwick when at university, picked up for Mohawks B on
Sunday.

It was another nine o'clock start on Sunday, but luckily this
time we all managed to get there in time to play and win what was to be our
penultimate game, against the Surrey Slingers' first team, 7-1. This game
decided who played in the Plate Final, so we really pushed for it through
our various pains and sickly feelings to win convincingly. Bizarrely, there
was then a six hour wait before we could play the Plate Final. We spent the
time cheering on Mohawks B, who had played very well all weekend, beating
teams from Cambridge, Brixton and Clapham to finish 12th, and providing much
moral support for the A team from the sideline during our games.

Yo Mama showed great skill in the final, beating Angels convincingly and
giving us a good taste of what the indoor nationals will be like this year.
Most of their points were scored by Tara, one of the top women players in
the world, who was diving all over the pitch to beat her markers to the disc
and score with spectacular style, pushing Yo Mama to a well earned victory.

We finally played the Plate Final against Charlie's Angels from Brixton, and
showed the crowd what we were really capable of, making layouts, sprinting
hard, showing great spirit, and winning the game 17-4, bringing home the
first piece of silverware for the year with style.

Now on to the outdoor season...
