So! Mixed Regionals:

It all started on Friday, well Tuesday really, when we ordered over 100 quid worth of food from Asda online. Friday 4 of us spent 2 hours making it all up and then joined the large handful of people at Falmer bar who were ready to meet and greet Thrown and come of UCL.

Many games of killer pool were had, we also played Duncan on the pool table, and invented a new game called Bruce Lee which involves one person having a small coin in the palm of their outstretched hand at waist level, and everyone else trying to dart in like a hungry seagull to snatch it before they can close their hand. Hours of fun. Best part was when at on point, someone missed, sent the coin flying through the air, and it landed in the old open captain Gashface’s nearly full pint. We made him down it of course.

So, somewhere near midnight a chuckaround circle was formed in front of Gardener Arts and eventually, all the campus people left for home, and Gash and the non-campus people started heading for the bus stop. It was at this point that I happened to be walking next to Herpes who slyly went “So, shall we go to the cube?”. Raised eyebrows and looks of ‘we shouldn’t’ were exchanged… We whispered to Fe2 and Guy walking just in front of us “Hey, hey, shall we go to the cube?” They also exchanged the old ‘should we’ looks, and seconds later, there we were trying to persuade the bouncers that although Guy didn’t have his student card he was a student. He was told to “Brush your hair next time”, and in we went. The others didn’t notice we had crept off till they reached and got on the bus.

So, the morning after, bright and early to Sussed sports centre for game time! The food stall was set up, everyone started playing, The news that Anne-Sophie had broken her finger came through which meant Mo3 had only Fran and Kendra to hold up the fort for the ladies, whilst Mo2 had Lauren, Janet and Rachael. Mo3 and Mo1 both kicked a fair amount of ass, and reports from Moulsecoombe said similar things about Mo2. Mo1 won their group and Mo2 and Mo3 both got crossovers!! Come on Top 8 we all thought.

Unfortunately it just wasn’t meant to be, and we heard that in some close crossovers both Mo2 and 3 missed out on Top 8 :( boo, earlyish start for Sunday. We heard of MC getting a crazy phantom layout D, where he dived across the hall, didn’t get it, but the other team was so shell shocked they just couldn’t hold onto it. Good job.

Anyway, to the party! Walking into Ocean rooms was like walking into a very fishy looking underground jazz bar. There were suits, hats and sunglasses everywhere. Some people had hidden guns, and the ladies were all dressed up in 20′s clothes, to fancy dresses and then Brunel’s “Gang of stars” (dear God). Much much drinking, trap dancing, circle dancing, limbo, conga lining, and some sharking (ask Antonio and Eunuch and Dave and …) was had, and in the wee hours of the morning after frisbee had taken over a club on Saturday night, drunk Italian mobsters stumbled home.

Sunday, hungover faces stumbled onto the pitches at various times of the day, and for the first time in a while Mo1 managed to come out guns blazing for their first game of the day on the Sunday (post-party day), it worked and set the pace for the rest of the day, it seems however that we need more practice to get Mo2 and 3 raring to go on Sunday mornings, as they got off to an unlucky start and lost their quarters to end up in a crazy Mohawks-Sublime group of 4. That was also the theme of the battle at the top, with in the end Mo3 beating Sublime 3, Mo2 losing to Sublime 2, and Mo1 beating Sublime 1 (quite convincingly) to take the Regional title! The first time Mohawks have taken a regional title in a fair few years (at least 5), and as such acquired what is apparently a New Zealand fertility tree (Eunuch you weren’t miles off mark with the massive dildo idea).

Well done to everyone who played and helped out, it was a tournament with a really good fun vibe about it, a lot of which is thanks to you smiling happy shiny people. Thanks also to everyone who hosted and helped out on the day, we couldn’t have done it without you, and of course Megan who put in a massive amount of organisation and stress to pull it off. Hip hip…

looking forward to many many more tournaments, practices and socials with you all,

Yeah Mohawks!
